Major Quake Shakes Philippine Capital
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 shook Manila on Friday night [Oct 8], sending high rises swaying, knocking out power to some areas and sending frightened residents into the streets. The shaking lasted for more than a minute and was felt in provinces north of Manila on the main Philippine island of Luzon. The U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado said on its Web site the preliminary magnitude was 6.6. A magnitude 6 quake can cause severe damage.
 
Strong Quake rocks Nicaragua
A powerful earthquake rocked Nicaragua on Saturday [Oct 9], frightening residents. No major injuries or damage were immediately reported. The magnitude 6.9 quake struck at 3:26 p.m. local time (5:36 p.m. EDT, 2136 GMT) in Nicaragua, and was centered 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Managua, the National Earthquake Information Center said. The quake sent residents running from their homes. But emergency officials said they had no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
