Scranton Main Break
Oct 27, 2004

Sinkholes Swallows 3 Cars
Within an hour, Ms. Nelson's 1999 Mercury Mystique along with two other cars were submerged by at least a 100,000 gallons of water. Businesses and residents from Lackawanna Avenue to Mulberry Street felt the impact of the break as many lost water or suffered reduced pressure. With North Washington Avenue and Linden Street closed, rush-hour traffic was snarled throughout downtown. The basements of several area businesses flooded as workers from Pennsylvania American Water Co. diverted water to other mains. Pennsylvania American Water said it is too early to determine the cause of the break.
